Rules:
A research proposal module, a brief dissertation, two required modules, and one elective module. After passing two modules, students can register for the research proposal module. Before being able to register for the short dissertation, students must first register and meet the prerequisites for the research proposal module.
Only students who have already registered for this qualification are eligible for the qualification till 2019.

Who can sign up?

  • Only after receiving notification from Unisa that their admissions application has been accepted may applicants register.
    Students who have formally delayed their studies must re-register online within the designated registration period for 2019 if they achieved adequate progress during the current academic year. Students who are re-registering but have not made sufficient progress might not be allowed to do so.
    Please submit an application for the new qualification during the upcoming application period if you want to start one.

  • the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology’s requirements (excluding Computing qualifications)
  • Ph.D. in Philosophy (90040) with MIT as an alternative
  • SET option for Doctor of Philosophy (90040)
  • Full Dissertation for a Master of Science in Nature Conservation (98022)
  • Qualifications in the Decision Sciences Department (Quantitative Management & Operations Research)

the duration of this degree

All master’s and doctorate degrees have a set timeframe for completion. Please refer to the Procedures for Master’s and Doctoral Degrees, sections 4.12 and 4.13.

  • A student enrolled in a structured 180-credit master’s degree program in coursework must finish the program of study in three years. An application for an additional year of study may be submitted to the Registrar by a student. The Executive Dean of the College where the student is enrolled will be consulted by the Registrar.
  • A student enrolled in a 180-credit structured research master’s degree program must finish the course of study in three years. An application for an additional year of study may be submitted to the Registrar by a student. The Executive Dean of the College where the student is enrolled will be consulted by the Registrar.
    Doctoral degree: A student enrolled in a research doctoral program is required to finish the course of study in six years. A student may submit an application to the Registrar for one extra year of study, but the Registrar will only take it into consideration if the Executive Dean of the College in which the student is enrolled recommends it.
