RULES

  • An individual who has attained this certification is qualified to instruct students in grades R through 3. This curriculum’s necessary element of teaching practice must be accomplished every year in accordance with the established standards. Five weeks of practicals are required each year, three of which must be delivered back-to-back. There are semester and year units in this diploma. Year modules can only be enrolled in during the January registration period of the academic year. Students must additionally register with SACE beginning with their first year of BEd registration (South African Council for Educators). Please visit the SACE website at https://www.sace.org.za for more details. The College of Education has approved transitional arrangements in order to go from non-aligned BEd to aligned BEd.

Purpose statement:

  • To ensure that qualified graduates can facilitate Foundation Phase teaching and learning in both rural and urban settings while acting ethically, professionally, and creatively, the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching program’s main objective is to ensure that graduates are capable of completing the program. After gaining the certification, graduates will also be able to implement and continually adapt to national legislation, policies, and guidelines governing and addressing Foundation Phase teaching and learning. This certificate also seeks to ensure that graduates are able to demonstrate a proper collaborative approach and recognize the involvement of all stakeholders who contribute to the success of Foundation Phase teaching and learning. Graduates who fulfill the prerequisites are also capable of effectively managing and overseeing Foundation Phase teaching and learning.
  • The BEd is a prerequisite for becoming a teacher at a school. Teachers belong to a profession whose main goal is to promote orderly learning. In order to prepare future teachers for this demanding position, the BEd program aims to: – Develop and consolidate relevant disciplinary, practical, pedagogical, and situational knowledge in an integrated manner. – Gain a practical understanding of educational theory, phase and/or subject specialization, practice, and policy in a range of South African schools. – Promote self-reflection and self-awareness in aspiring instructors. – Promote knowledge of teaching as a profession and commitment to the teaching profession’s ideals. – Assisting students in creating a sense of self as instructors and professional dispositions. – Give students the chance to develop into engaged citizens.
